Pet cat care should be your responsibility if you have your pet cat at home. Knowing if you have a healthy cat would require that you know how to observe how your cat looks. You should be able to judge if your cat is too thin or too fat. The best thing to do it is to observe your pet cat and see how it looks.
When examining your cat, you may be able to see the telltale signs if it is either too thin or too heavy. Your pet cat may be too thin if the ribs are obviously visible on your short haired cat. The ribs may show or you may be able to feel it on a thick haired cat with seemingly no palpable fat anywhere. You may also observe some slight abdominal tuck as well as no visible fat on your pet.
A cat that is too heavy may have their ribs not easily obvious that may be covered by excess fat. If you observe your cat, you may notice that it might not have a visible waist that has become rounded with excess fat. Your cat would seem rounded with the prominent abdominal fat as well as with fat deposits over the back area. This would be one of the signs that your cat may be overweight.

The Cat Care and Health Insurance Know How’s
July 17th, 2008 at 09:57 am by Cat Lover in Cat Care, Cat HealthMany people love their pet so much they have them insured. Cat care and health insurance is not the same thing. The first is a must while the latter can be forgone.
In order to care for your cat, you must understand your pet as a pet. You have to be responsible once you have taken the steps to acquire a feline companion. There should be no going back. So think twice, thrice and a hundred of times before committing into becoming a parent to a pet.
Cats are special. They can see sharper than humans do. They can also smell a lot better. This is the reason why you need to arrange things in your home accordingly once you have decided that a cat will soon join in.

Ever dreamt of becoming a pet owner? How about taking care of a three legged cat? If you are serious about caring for a feline companion, you have to be ready for any comeuppance.
Being a care giver to a normal cat is also not as easy as you think it is. Responsibility comes with hard word, practice, learning and applying all those to the way you do things. But with a three legged cat, everything must be done with extra cautiousness and care.
If you know your pet’s peeves, you might as well double the effort of avoiding such if you are taking care of a three legged cat.

Owning a pet has certain responsibilities. You have to feed and groom it as well as keep them away from various diseases. This is what cat care and health is all about and by doing it correctly, they can live for 10 years or even longer.
Cat vaccinations are the most effective means of fighting a disease. This also prevents the cat from ever becoming a carrier. Some of the common vaccinations given are for cat flu, feline leukemia or FeLV, Feline Chlamydophilosis and Feline Infectious Enteritis or FIE.
If your cat is given a vaccination, be aware that they may experience some side effects. This goes away shortly even if they develop flu like symptoms or fatigue in the next dew days. In rare cases, the cat may develop cancer where the injection has inserted that may develop in weeks, months or even years.

It may be hard for a pet owner to notice a pet cat getting older. Outside, pet cats may show the same things- playing with toys around the home, taking naps sprawled on a favorite spot inside the home, snuggle up with you on the sofa. But inside, it might be a whole different thing. And health care for cats as they get old may change a little bit.
When caring your an aging cat, there are some things that a concerned pet owner should know about. When a cat approaches somewhere between the ages of eight or twelve years, this is the equivalent of a human being approaching middle age. This will be the time that your pet cat may be needing a bit of extra attention.
Most veterinarian generally estimate that cats start their geriatric years when they reach twelve years. This will be the time that caring for your pet cat would have to change to accommodate the needs that aging brings.

You do not have to wait for the month of February to remember about cat teeth care. It is a part of your responsibility as a pet owner to be mindful about cleaning your pet’s oral hygiene.
Why February, you may ask. The American Veterinary Medicine Association or the AVMA and the American Veterinary Dental Society or the AVDS join forces each February to give this month a different meaning. Yes, it is still about love. But now it is love for pets and their teeth.
These two groups tagged what used to be the love month as the Pet Dental Health Month. They both aim and do steps in educating pet owners like you about how to care for the dental needs of your pets every day.
But these groups know how important this is for the pets and their owners. They actually would want all those who are caring for any pets to consider each month as the dental health month for pets.

There is nothing quite as relaxing as a good massage. Many of us seek out professional massage experts on a regular basis because we appreciate the relief and comfort a good rubdown can provide.
Your cat may not suffer from the same professional and personal stresses and physical hardships you encounter on a daily basis, but he or she will still appreciate an appropriately administered massage just as much as any person might.
There are a few techniques you can use to make the cat massage a hit. First, you must find a way to approach the cat in a manner that won’t be seen as aggressive. If a cat believes your massage is an act of aggression, the idea of providing some relief and comfort will actually backfire.

We often think of cats as being somewhat standoffish and independent. Admittedly, it is harder to develop a close bond with a cat than it is with a dog, but one can develop a truly close and important relationship with a feline pet.
One of the best ways to strengthen the cat/owner bond is by spending a little extra time and effort pampering the animal. For all of their independence, cats really do enjoy being spoiled. They appreciate the extra attention and see it as a signal of friendship and companionship from their owner.
If you have a pet cat and are looking for a way to get a little closer to him or her, you might want to consider exploring some ways to pamper the pet a little bit. There are literally hundreds of cat pampering techniques that can improve the quality of your relationship.
All you need is a good resource to supply you with some ideas. Cat pampering is really only limited by your imagination. By seeking out some helpful hints and recommendations, you will soon be discovering new ways to pampering your cat every day.
The end result may be a more rewarding relationship with your cat. A pet cat may never charge the door, jump up on your chest and lick your face when you come home, but with a little pampering you can develop a stronger bond.

If you want to enjoy the companionship of a healthy and happy cat, one of the most important things you can do is to safeguard its health. Vaccinations can protect your cat from many common cat diseases.
Weaned From Mother’s Immunity
When your kitten is 6 to 8 weeks old, you should begin his vaccinations. Before this time, the mother’s antibodies have been protecting him. Once he is weaned, however, he will need to develop antibodies of his own.

Could Your Dog or Cat Be at Risk for Kidney Disease?
May 11th, 2008 at 10:55 am by Cat Lover in Cat Care, Cat HealthJust like people, animals are susceptible to illness and stress. And, just like people, there is a lot you can do to keep them healthy.
Julie noticed her dog, Zac, was drinking more water. Not just once, but several days in a row. She knew that excess thirst can be a sign of illness, so she took Zac to her veterinarian for tests. Blood and urine tests showed that Zac was in the early stages of acute kidney disease. But Zac was lucky. Because his problem was caught early, Julie’s veterinarian was able to treat the disease successfully and Zac made a complete recovery.

There are a number of reasons that cats, who are fastidious creatures, may choose to urinate outside their litterbox. The primary causes are a box that is dirty, and hasn’t been kept scooped or cleaned, and urinary tract infection. If your cat’s litterbox is pristine, then you may want to take them to the vet for a urinalysis, and then a discussion of possible behavioral causes.
But when a cat urinates indoors, particularly if they have done it more than once in the same spot, the smell can be pretty pervasive. The worst is from unaltered tom cats, whose hormones are announcing that he’s ready for romance. Neutering will not only cure the odor, but the behavior as well. However, you’ll still need to find a cure for the smells and/ or stains.
If you can smell it, but not locate the stains, get a blacklight at the hardware store. These are the “special effect” lights used for Halloween and stage productions. When turned on in total darkness, they have a purple glow, and make certain things like white articles, fluoresce and glow in the dark. It will also make urine glow. Put the bulb in an automobile “trouble lamp” receptacle and make a hood to go over the usual metal cage. This will help direct the light, making it more intensive and the stains easier to find.

Special Needs Kitties Need Specific Litter Box Strategies
May 6th, 2008 at 10:47 am by Cat Lover in Cat Care, Cat HealthYou don’t often hear about or see information for special needs kitties. These may be blind, very old (with limited mobility), or disabled in some way. Disabled cats may be amputees, or even paralyzed. There are special mobile devices you can purchase for your paralyzed cat.
But this article will talk a little bit about the cat litter box concerns for special needs kitties. Due to their limited mobility or lack of site, litter box type and location are absolutely critical.
If you have a blind cat, your best bet is maintain location consistency as much as possible. When your blind kitty has become accustomed to finding his cat litter box in one location, the most successful strategy is to leave the box there. However, if you have to move the box, you’ll need to help retrain your blind cat to find his way to it again. A lot of patience will be necessary. You could even confine the blind cat to that particular location for awhile, so he’ll re-learn how to find the litter box easily.

It may come as a surprise, if you’re a new cat owner, that many health problems may befall your feline friend. Some problems are easily preventable, while others are hereditary.
Hairballs
Hairballs are among the most common of cat health problems. Cats groom themselves almost constantly, and swallow the loose hair that comes off their tongues. Occasionally, the hair gathers into a ball and lodges in the cat’s digestive tract instead of passing on through the body. If your cat starts coughing and hacking, he probably has a hairball. While the end product is unpleasant for the owner, most cats don’t have a problem dislodging hairballs.
However, hairballs can occasionally pass into a cat’s intestines and cause a blockage. This can be a life-threatening problem. There are a few signs to look for to see if your cat’s hairball is dangerous. If your cat is constipated, off his feed, or is lethargic with a dull coat, then he could have a serious blockage. A vet exam is definitely in order.

1. Keep your pregnant cat indoors
Don’t expose an expecting kitty to danger. But there are more reasons. Some queens go into heat even during pregnancy. Cats are capable to be pregnant of two different litters at the same them. And of course, a pregnant cat should not give birth in a cold place outside.
2. Give your kitty the right food
It should be high on calcium and protein. Kitten food is specially designed to meet the need of pregnant and nursing felines. Vitamin supplements are recommended too.
3. Do not give any medication during pregnancy
A pregnant cat should get medication only in emergency. The same goes for deworming products, or products against fleas. If she has worms or fleas, first consult your vet.
