So the day has finally come for you to bring your kitten home. Make sure that you have all the necessary supplies and equipment ready for the kitten’s arrival. To ensure that the kitten will feel less disoriented and insecure, try to bring back a familiar item from its former home.

To prevent the kitten from escaping when you let it out of its carrier, make sure all doors and windows are closed and any fireplaces or small recesses are blocked.

To let your kitten settle down without harassments from other family pets, placed your kitten’s litter box and food dish in a quiet corner of the house. Offer your kitten small meals at first till it is completely settled down. Provide a bed made of a simple cardboard box lined with a blanket as your kitten’s sleeping quarters.

Care should be taken to introduce your kitten to its new environment, especially if you have a boisterous family. Restrict your kitten movement to a particular room at first. To minimized problems down the road, give your kitten some time to know and get acquainted with everyone in your family in a calm and relaxed environment.
It’s a good ideal to take short trips in the car with your kitten at this age to get it acclimatized to traveling.

If you have other pets at home, allow your kitten to settle down for a few days before introducing them to each other. To protect all parties, try putting your new kitten in a portable pen in a corner of a room and let the other household pets roam the room at will. The ideal is to let them get used to each other gradually.

Tip #1
Provide a safe environment for your kitten by removing all potential hazards such as dangling electric cords, hanging curtains, etc. To avoid your kitten from being trapped inside cupboards, drawers, etc, make sure they are kept closed at all times.

Tip #2
Provide a calm environment in which your kitten can gradually integrate itself into the household. If you have other pets or children at home, house your kitten in a portable crate or indoor pen where it can be safe from harassments.

Tip #3
Provide your kitten with its own space by placing its bed, food and water bowls, and litter box in a quiet corner of your home.

Tip #4
Let your kitten get used to new noises and sensations such as televisions, vacuum cleaners, washing machines, etc, and allow it to be handled carefully by other people as part of its constant socialization program.
