Part 2: Feeding Your Kitten
April 19th, 2008 at 01:59 am by Cat Lover in GeneralFor healthy growth and development, it is essential to provide a balanced diet to your kitten. Your kitten requires the same protein requirements as adult cats but try not to commit the mistake of over feeding large quantities of red meat to your kitten. More protein does not necessary translate to healthy growth and development. The key is a balanced diet and the easiest way is to provide your kitten with commercially prepared food that comes with all types of essential nutrients.
You may choose to complement your kitten’s diet with home-prepared meal from time to time but do it sparingly to avoid unbalancing your kitten’s diet and turning your kitten into a fussy eater. To be sure that you are giving your kitten the right diet, consult your vet first.
Before the age of 3 moths old, your kitten will requires four small meals a day and by 6 moths old, you should reduce the frequency to two meals a day with bigger portions. If you wish to adjust your kitten’s diet, introduce the new food gradually by mixing increasing proportions of it with the old food.
Tip #1
Consult your vet on a complete balanced diet for your kitten.
Tip #2
Provide a bowl of fresh drinking water next to the food bowl.
Tip #3
Serve your cat tinned food at room temperature.
Tip #4
If you are using table scraps as occasional treats for your kitten, chop them in to small pieces first.
Tip #5
Dispose all uneaten tinned food after every meal unless it’s dried food.
Tip #6
Clean all food, water and serving utensils daily and if possible after every meal.
Tip #7
If your kitten stops eating for more than 24 hours, contact your vet immediately.
Tip #8
Cook all raw food that you will be giving your kitten thoroughly first before serving.
Tip #9
Do not serve your kitten tinned food that is meant for dogs or other pets.
