As your kitten reach maturity at the age of 6 months, it requires about 600 – 700 calories a day to sustain its growth and development. This would last until your kitten reaches 1 year old, when it requires only 450 calories (a large 500g/16oz can of cat food) daily split between two meals.

Tinned food is available in a wide variety of flavors, but many owners dislike the smell, especially in hot weather. If you are one, you may opt for those complete dry diets instead. Check the label on the packaging for feeding instructions. These diets normally come in different formulas for growing, full grown, overweight, or elderly cats. One advantage of dry food because of its texture is it helps to prevent tartar from building up on your cat’s teeth.

Do not over-feed your cat as obesity can put a strain on its joint and heart. A normal cat weighs between 3.5 -5.5 kg. Consult your vet for a dieting program if your cat’s weight goes above 7 kg. On the other hand, if your cat is dropping weight when on good appetite, it could indicate illness, and you should consult your vet.

Cats are fussy eaters and anything that smells unpleasant by their standards, they will walk away. Cats have a preference for food that is at blood temperature. If you are going to serve your cat tinned food, or leftovers from your own dinner last night, make sure you heat it up first. The ideal temperature is around 35°C (100°F). For a nutritionally balanced diet, commercial dry cat foods are still the best choice for your cat.

You can supplement your cat’s commercial dry diet with tinned or cooked fresh meat, liver, fish, or cooked egg. However, it is not advisable to feed your cat more than 25% of its diet this way. Also, your cat may develop a preference for such food and stop feed on commercial dry food which is more nutritionally balanced. Diarrhoea may also occur as a result of switching diets and making too many sudden changes. Try to avoid high fat dairy products as they tend to cause stomach upsets. One important point to take note is to provide your cat with plenty of fresh water especially when you are feeding it dried food.

Home Cooking Tips

Tip #1
Serve your cat baked, grilled or boiled meat rather than fried meat. Roasted meat is acceptable.

Tip #2
Chop the food into small pieces and remove all bones.

Tip #3
Do not add too many vegetables or carbohydrates into your cat’s diet and keep the portions modest.

Tip #4
Serve sardines, tuna, herring or mackerel as an occasional treat.

Tip #5
Use white fish as a lure for an unwilling or unenthusiastic eater.

Tip #6
Do not add any flavoring especially spices as many cats tend to avoid them. Same for sugar as you should not encourage your cat to develop a taste for sugar.

Tip #7
No raw meat as it may be diseased.
