Cat Litter Box

February 18, 2020

A cat litter box is a box like container used to collect feces and urine from indoor cats. Also known sometimes as a catbox, cat pan, litter pan or litter tray, it is a must have for cat owners who do not allow their pets to go outdoors to eliminate their body wastes. There is a good reason why many cat owners do not allow their cats to roam outdoors. Studies have shown that indoor cats on average live ten years longer than outdoor cats. This is due to the fact that outdoor cats are exposed to more dangers such as predators, traffic and weather conditions.

Cat litter boxes are normally filled with a type of filler material known as cat litter to stimulate a cat’s natural instinct in disposing of their waste in the wild. Cats normally excrete in soft or sandy soil for easy burial in the wild. After excretion, they will use their paws in a backward sweeping motion to cover their feces. An inch or more of cat litter are normally used to fill out the bottom of a litter box to help create the natural environment which cats normally excrete in.

Types Of Cat Litter Boxes
There are many different types of cat litter boxes available on the market. The prices for litter boxes can range from a few dollars for a basic no frills litter box which is essentially just a plastic container to hundreds of dollars for litter boxes which are automated and self cleaning. Some litter boxes are covered to provide privacy to the pet, while others may have handles to make moving much easier. Liners can also be used to make cleaning and emptying a litter box easier for the cat owner.

  • Top Entry Litter Boxes

Covered Cat Litter Boxes
Covered or hooded litter boxes are usually made of plastic and have removable covers or hoods which can be removed for cleaning purposes. These litter boxes are suitable for cats which need a bit more privacy. They also help to address issues such as excessive litter tracking as well as waste being eliminated over the walls.

Open Cat Litter Pans
These litter pans are usually made of plastic and shaped like a regular rectangular tray with higher walls at the sides to hold cat litter. The open nature of such pans facilitates ventilation and prevent build up of odors arising from pet waste. This also allows cat owners to easily check whether their litter pans are full and in need of emptying.

Self-cleaning Cat Litter Boxes
Cleaning the litter box is probably the most thankless task for any cat owner. These litter boxes will allow cat owners to clean and dispose of their pets’ waste easily, without much hassles. Ideal for cat parents who hate cleaning after their pets’ businesses.

Top Entry Cat Litter Boxes
These litter boxes are fully enclosed except for an opening on the top of the box. This feature helps to prevent other pets or even young children from accessing the contents of the litter boxes. However, this type of litter boxes are not suitable for cats with health issues, or even elderly and obese cats as the opening may be too difficult for them to access.

Types Of Cat Litter
Cat litter is made from materials which can absorb moisture and odors from wastes. There are many different types of cat litter available on the market. The following is a list of the most common cat litter.

Clumping Litter
This type of litter is usually made from bentonite, which is a type of highly absorbent clay which will clump together when wet. This characteristic allows waste materials to be easily scooped out, thus making cleaning of your pet’s litter box much easier. However, clumping litter made from bentonite is usually dusty and non biodegradable.

Non-clumping Litter
The earliest type of non-clumping litter are made from clay, and still widely used today. Clay is widely used as it is highly absorbent and offers some form of odor control. However, it doesn’t form clumps when wet. Also, once the clay absorbs to its maximum capacity, odor can become an issue. To combat this issue, various ingredients such as baking soda and charcoal are added to overcome this problem.

Biodegradable Litter
Corn, grass, pine, recycled paper, sawdust, walnut shells and wheat are some of the common materials used to make biodegradable litter. Litter made from these materials is highly absorbent, clumps well, low on dust and tracking and provides excellent odor control. However, materials like corn and wheat may be a problem ingredient for pets.

Dust-free Litter
Dust-free litter is normally made from recycled paper. Litter made from recycle paper is highly absorbent and biodegradable as well. Other materials may be used to make dust-free litter, but the end product may not be totally dust-free.

Non-tracking Litter
This type of litter is designed to minimize or prevent cats from spreading tiny granules of litter all over the place everything they use their litter boxes. Non-tracking litter is thus the most preferred type of cat litter for cat owners who are particular about their cleanliness of their homes.

Scented Litter
This type of litter usually contains artificial ingredients such as deodorizers, fragrances and perfumes that make them smell nicer. Ideal for those cat owners who cannot stand the strong odor of urine and feces.

Silica Gel Litter
This type of litter is made up of tiny silica crystals which are highly absorbent, has excellent moisture and odor control qualities, far superior when compared to other types of litter. It is also almost dust free and last longer, making it the most ideal cat litter for cat owners, though it is more expensive than other types of cat litter.
